Sophomore forestry students James Judge and Braxton Spurlin are continuing their lumberjack training over the summer and are actively competing in the
South Atlantic Woodsman's Association (
SAWA). In 2008, the HCC Lumberjack Coach, Jimmy Lawrence, took over leadership of the SAWA and Haywood Community College became a major sponsor of the association. The summer/fall season gets kicked off Saturday, June 21, with a competition at the Cradle of Forestry.
